Craig L. Lovell

Vice President, Safety, Quality and Mission Assurance

Craig Lovell is the Vice President for Safety, Quality and Mission Assurance (SQ&MA) for United Space Alliance, LLC, reporting directly to President and CEO Mike McCulley. Appointed to the position in August 2005, he is responsible for safety, quality and mission assurance for the International Space Station and Space Shuttle programs, and for developing and maintaining total quality systems throughout USA.

Lovell has had a variety of company assignments with in USA. Prior to assuming his current position, Lovell served as Vice President for Exploration Programs, where he was responsible for establishing and maintaining USA’s business strategy for NASA’s Space Exploration Programs. He also has served as the Deputy to the Vice President for SQ&MA and was responsible for the execution of safety practices, maintaining the quality system, and ensuring mission readiness for Shuttle and International Space Station activities managed by USA.

Lovell previously served as the Director of Strategic Planning & Business Development where he was responsible for the evaluation and capture of new business opportunities. He served as the Director and USA Process Owner for Software and was responsible for establishing company level policy and processes for software development and sustaining engineering.

Prior to joining USA, Lovell served as Vice President and Division Manager for Science Applications International Corporation in Houston where he managed several major information technology contracts for Johnson Space Center and commercial customers. From 1990 through 1995, Lovell was a Project Manager for Rockwell Space Operations Company, where he managed the Automated Information System Security Engineering Team and led the project to re-engineer the Shuttle Reconfiguration System.

Lovell served in the United States Air Force as an officer for more than 20 years, ending his career at Air Force Space Command as the Director of Military Satellite Communications Systems and the Operational Manager for the MILSTAR System. He also commanded two tactical operations squadrons, worked in the Pentagon on both the Air Staff and the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and served in Vietnam.

Lovell’s awards include numerous military decorations and awards for combat and meritorious service. He received three NASA achievement awards as well as a special recognition award from the NASA Administrator. He was selected by the Project Management Institute and the Darden School of Management as one of the top five Information Technology Project Managers in America in 1997.

Lovell holds a bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering Technology from Northwestern State University and a Masters in Space Systems Management from Webster University.
