




Mary L.F. Burgess
Lean Six Sigma Senior Champion
Mary L.F. Burgess is the Lean Six Sigma (L6S) Senior Champion for United Space Alliance. In this position she is responsible for the overall deployment of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methods and tools across the company. She serves as lead and coordinator for Deployment Champions and Black Belts, oversees and leads L6S initiatives, performs centralized resource utilization and planning for Company and Program level process improvement initiatives, tracks benefits from L6S projects, and co-selects individuals to work as Champions and Belts across the company. She has held this position since March 2002.
Prior to working on the L6S deployment, Burgess was the Director of Product System Software where she was responsible for establishing company-wide software engineering standards and ensuring the overall integrity of operational software engineering processes.
Burgess has held a variety of Space Shuttle Program technical and managerial positions with increasing responsibility since 1983. She started with Computer Sciences Corporation as a systems performance analyst in the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Mission Control Center (MCC) working on mission operations ground support computer systems and networks. At the initiation of the STSOC contract in 1985, she transitioned to Unisys Corporation supporting the Flight Operations element. Her various management positions in Flight Operations allowed her to lead numerous, multi-year, system re-engineering projects in the MCC and other major computing facilities at JSC.
Burgess joined USA in October 1996 as Director of Platform Engineering in Flight Operations. In this position, she was responsible for computer system hardware engineering, operating systems, automated test equipment, and manufacturing/fabrication support for the JSC MCC, Integrated Training Facility, and Software Production Facility.
Before accepting the company level positions in Product System Software and L6S, Burgess served as Director of Information Management, Houston Operations.
